Repair work scheduled for Johnson County Museum in Shawnee

JOHNSON COUNTY, KANSAS (March 17, 2014) - The Johnson County Museum in Shawnee will undergo repairs beginning Monday, March 24. Work is projected to last six weeks. The Museum will remain open during this time, and the project will affect two exhibits.

The repair work includes abatement of mold in two hallways in the Museum's exhibit area, created by water infiltration through the exterior walls of those hallways. The causes have been identified and partially rectified, and the remaining work will occur as part of this project. An enclosure will seal off the area during the project. The mold abatement is expected to take two weeks, followed by insulation, drywall, painting and other repair work to the area.

The work will require the temporary loss of ADA access to the Museum's KidScape exhibit, as well as limiting that area to 49 visitors at any given time. In addition, the repairs will require the temporary closing of two areas of the "Seeking the Good Life" exhibit - the 1930s section called "Building the Suburbs" and the last gallery which educates visitors about modern Johnson County.

"We are taking every precaution to ensure that this repair project will be done safely and with minimum disruptions to our Museum visitors' experience," says Joe Waters, Director of Facilities, Johnson County Government. "The areas under repair will be completely sealed off to the public, and will have abatement professionals on hand inspecting the work and testing air quality throughout the Museum."
