Museum After Hours: Ronald Mastin, Kansas Native, Shares His Experience as a POW

TOPEKA—The Kansas Museum of History’s popular series, Museum After Hours, continues in September with Defending Freedoms, presented by our special guest, Ronald Mastin. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, September 8.

Mastin, a native Kansan, grew up in Beloit, graduated from the University of Kansas, and was commissioned a second lieutenant through the Air Force ROTC. While flying his 34th combat mission on January 16, 1967, Mastin was forced to eject over North Vietnam and was taken as a prisoner of war. He spent 2,239 days in captivity including years at the “Hanoi Hilton,” where John McCain was also a prisoner of war. He was finally released during Operation Homecoming on March 4, 1973. Mastin grew up in Beloit, graduated from the University of Kansas, and now lives in Georgia. We are proud to bring this decorated Vietnam veteran home for this program.

The series is presented in conjunction with the nationally award-winning special exhibit, Captured: The Extraordinary Adventures of Colonel Hughes, to recognize the 100th anniversary of World War I. Half-price Museum admission is available from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The Museum Store is also open until 6:30 p.m. The Kansas Museum of History is located at 6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka. For more information, call (785) 272-8681, ext. 415, or visit kshs.org/museum.
