Largest Civil War battle west of the Mississippi happened 150 years ago this week

The Battle of Westport 150 invites you and your family to join the commemoration this week of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Westport. Step back in time October 23-26 and walk the hallowed ground as we recall Kansas City's most dramatic days in the largest Civil War battle west of the Mississippi which occurred 150 years ago this week.

Reenactments in Swope Park with mounted cavalry on Saturday and Sunday October 25-26, exhibits at the Visitor Center, medical corps demonstrations, period artisans, with special appearances by historic figures from that bygone era. There will also be a kids’ camp and Civil War era music.

The commemoration will begin on Thursday afternoon at Loose Park with a one-hour walking tour of the portion of the battlefield around Loose Park. The events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will occur on the battlefield in and around Swope Park and Battle of Westport Museum. These events are free and open to the public except for the special Friday evening dinner with the troops on the battlefield.
