Freedom's Frontier joins national #GivingTuesday movement

Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area has joined #GivingTuesday, an effort that utilizes the collective power of a unique blend of partners - charities, families, businesses and individuals - to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season. Coinciding with Thanksgiving and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support, and help create a better world.

Taking place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Day, (Dec. 2, 2014), #GivingTuesday harnesses the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.

Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area, which is participating in #GivingTuesday, is a nonprofit, collaborative community of historical organizations (such as museums, historic sites, convention visitor bureaus and other travel and tourism organizations, historical societies, libraries and archives, battlefields, trails associations, cemeteries, nature preserves and parks). Organizations that partner with FFNHA work together to preserve and interpret, for local residents and travelers, nationally significant stories about: the shaping of the frontier, the Missouri-Kansas Border War, and the enduring struggle for freedom.

National heritage areas are affiliates of the National Park Service. The first heritage area celebrated its 30th anniversary in August, 2014. FFNHA will celebrate 10 years in 2016.

Partnering with #GivingTuesday will allow supporters of history-related organizations across the *41 counties in Kansas and Missouri that make up Freedom's Frontier to donate to their favorite sites, or to the heritage area as a whole. Those who are interested in joining Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area's #GivingTuesday initiative can visit the heritage area's Web page. (*Note to reporters/editors: See full list of counties in both states at the bottom of this release.)

"Freedom's Frontier proudly supports the goals of #GivingTuesday. Unlike Black Friday, which encourages commercial spending, #GivingTuesday encourages charitable giving to benefit the lives of families within our community," said Fred Conboy, Executive Director of Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area. "Freedom's Frontier's family includes more than 100 partners in 41 counties across Missouri and Kansas that preserve our shared stories of freedom. A gift to Freedom's Frontier, or one of its valued partners, ensures that Freedom's beacon shines brightly in our communities during and beyond the holiday season."

#GivingTuesday was established when a group led by the 92nd Street Y (92Y) in New York City, came together to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving. More than 10,000 organizations have now joined the movement and are providing creative ways people can embrace #GivingTuesday and collaborate in their giving efforts to create more meaningful results. Corporate and nonprofit organizations have committed to participate in the initiative.

"It's been a privilege to work with remarkable leaders all over the country building a movement around #GivingTuesday," said Henry Timms, 92Y's Executive Director. "This initiative has truly been crowd-sourced by some of the smartest and most connected minds among the next generation of philanthropists and entrepreneurs."

"#GivingTuesday is a counter narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism," said Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation. "The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world."
