TRADITIONAL 1750’S MARDI GRAS AT FORT OSAGE NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK

Jackson County Parks & Recreation invites you to explore the history of the early French presence on the western frontier as Fort Osage presents a “Traditional 1750’s Mardi Gras”.

The Kansas City area was the location of a small but important French community before the area was settled by American and other European settlers in the early 1800s. In preparation for the Lenten season, early French settlers would have marked this period by preparing special foods and celebrating with song and dance.

Professional staff and volunteers will present activities commonly associated with the celebration of “Mardi Gras” based on diligent research. Song, dance and festive foods consistent with life in an isolated territory will be presented. Interpreters will share with the public how this early French community came into existence and illustrate their dependence and alliances with the Native American Indians. The event will demonstrate the settlers’ efforts to keep their French religious and secular traditions alive, thousands of miles from their homeland.

This new event at Fort Osage National Historic Landmark is the perfect opportunity for your family to experience a unique and largely forgotten part of our earliest history!
