Freedom's Frontier donations exceed staff goals for annual #GivingTuesday campaign

Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area staff got jailed on December 1, 2015, but it was to raise money for the history nonprofit, an affiliate of the National Park Service.

The Wilson County (KS) Historical Society and Museum, Shawnee Town 1929, Lexington Historical Museum, and Constitution Hall State Historic Site in Lecompton, Kansas provided historic jails cells in which to "lock up" Freedom's Frontier Managing Director Julie McPike, Education and Interpretation Manager Elizabeth Hobson, Communications Manager Sonia Smith, and Partnership Coordinator Kathleen Quigley. Jim Ogle, the organization's new executive director, started his job with Freedom's Frontier on Tuesday, and joined in the campaign.

Freedom's Frontier staff set a goal to raise $1,000 for the 2015 campaign, which split among the staff was $200 each for "bail" money. By 10 a.m., about 60% of the goal had already been donated. By the end of the day, Freedom's Frontier supporters had contributed $5, 615 through online donations at https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/freedomsfrontier, on Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area's Web page, and checks and cash presented to staff.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring on December 1, 2015, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Nationally, #Giving Tuesday's 698,961 donors gave $116.7 million - 1.08 million gifts of an average of $107.47.

Freedom's Frontier, one of 49 national heritage areas that preserve nationally significant historical and cultural regions, began as a grassroots organization. The partners (historical societies, museums, historic sites, battlefields, trails associations, archives and libraries, tourism organizations and others interested in preserving local history) in this bi-state heritage area work together to interpret, conserve and preserve history and historic sites along these three major themes: shaping the frontier, the Missouri-Kansas Border War, and the enduring struggle for freedom. The heritage area is comprised of 29 eastern Kansas and 12 western Missouri counties, with Freedom's Frontier as the coordinating entity, a nonprofit that provides partner support.
