The Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park seeks volunteers for Park Day 2016

Baldwin City, Kansas – In the aftermath of our nation’s commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, volunteers across the country will once again answer their nation’s call to service – only these dedicated men, women, and children will be armed with rakes, shovels, and other tools.

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, history buffs and preservationists from around the country will team up with the Civil War Trust to help clean and restore America’s priceless battlefields, cemeteries and shrines of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Park Day is the nationwide volunteer effort created by the Civil War Trust to assist local groups with the maintenance of historic sites.

This annual hands-on preservation event comprises 130 sites in 29 states. Individuals of all ages and ability levels are welcome. In exchange for their hard work, volunteers can receive t-shirts and learn the site’s history from local experts.

This is the 8th year that the Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park will be one of the sites benefitting from Park Day related activities. Volunteers are needed to upgrade nature trails, clear brush around the stone bridge, remove invasive plants from restored prairie, pick up litter and debris from winter storms, and generally spruce up the Battlefield and the Park to get ready for this year's touring season. There will be work for both adults and children. Volunteers should have gloves, wear sturdy clothing and footwear, and consider bringing appropriate tools.
