Pioneer Days Summer Day Camp Explores Life on the Trail

The Franklin County Historical Society is offering a three-day summer day camp for children ages 7 through 12. This year’s theme is “On the Trail,” and campers will explore how travelers prepared for a long journey in the 19th century. They will learn about packing a wagon, overcoming the challenges and dangers on the trail, and working with others to reach their destination. The three-day camp includes a field trip to the Ivan Boyd Prairie Reserve to walk in the Santa Fe Trail ruts and learn about native plants. Campers will also learn about Catherine and Jacob Dietrich, who often sheltered travelers at their cabin, which once stood near the Humboldt Trail near present-day Princeton, Kansas.

Dates for this year’s Pioneer Days camps are May 29, 30, 31 (session 1), June 3, 4, 5 (session 2), and June 11, 12, 13 (session 3). Campers will begin each day at Dietrich Cabin in City Park, 5th and Main, Ottawa, Kansas. Registration deadlines have been extended to May 19, May 22, and May 26. Registration is $40 for FCHS members and $45 for non-members. For more information, visit olddepotmuseum.org or contact the Old Depot Museum at (785) 242-1250.
