Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site hosts lecture:
the impact of Civil War Orders No. 11 from the women's perspective
Peggy Buhr, director of the Bates County Museum will present "Orders No. 11 – Desperate Days and Hard Travel: Recollections of Women" at Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22.
On Aug. 25, 1863, General Thomas Ewing issued the most infamous military order of the Civil War in western Missouri. General Orders No. 11 commanded the forced removal of people throughout four counties, with Bates County being the only one that was totally vacated. The order was highly controversial and there was immediate reaction to the cruelty visited upon the citizens of the region that became known as the Burnt District. Learn more about the accounts from women who lived in the Burnt District at that time.
