    Through Darkness to Light; Photographs Along the Underground Railroad

    This pictorial exhibition tells the story of an estimated 100,000 slaves between 1830 and the end of the Civil War in 1865 who chose to embark on a journey in search of freedom. In conjunction with this Traveling Exhibition from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Wyandotte County Historical Museum will display artifacts found at the excavation of the Quindaro Township in Kansas City Kansas, an area believed to be an instrumental part of the Underground Railroad....details >>

    Homeschool Wednesday

    Visit the Kansas Museum of History and join us for Homeschool Wednesdays, the first Wednesday of each month, September through May. Discover a new topic each month! Fourth grade through high school students can learn and explore primary and secondary sources with activities related to each topic. Cost is $5 per student, which includes Museum admission.     This 3-day, 2-night tour will journey from Bonner Springs, KS to Wyandotte, OK. The bus tour will include a tour through historic Fort Scott, KS to Miami, OK. We will tour the Wyandotte Nation Cultural Center, visit with Chief Billy Friend and Second Chief Norm Hildebrand, as well a trip to the Motorcycle Museum and Mickey Mantel House.     Museum After Hours-Defending Freedoms

    Native Kansan Ronald Mastin grew up in Beloit, graduated from University of Kansas, and was commissioned a second lieutenant through Air Force ROTC. While flying his 34th combat mission on January 16, 1967, Mastin was forced to eject over North Vietnam and was taken prisoner. He spent 2,239 days in captivity, including years at the “Hanoi Hilton.” Captain Mastin was released during Operation Homecoming, March 4, 1973. He now lives in Georgia.
