    AAA estimates that 112.5 million Americans traveled over Christmas and New Year holidays in 2018 (about 1-in-3 Americans). The vast majority—more than 102 million—drove to their destination. Americans love their cars. Johnson County Museum’s temporary exhibit, “The Turbulent Twenties,” is on display through May 11, 2019.     On Migration to Douglas County - A Traveling Exhibit

    This traveling exhibit features 13 panels that focus on how communities in Douglas County were populated. A variety of stories are included in the exhibit that was funded by the Kansas Humanities Council and Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area with support from the Douglas County Heritage Office. The exhibit will open at the Territorial Capital Museum on January 15th and will run through March 15th....details >>

    Birds: Headbangers!

    Walk-in (all ages) Missouri is home to seven species of head banging woodpeckers that use our trees for homes as well as food sources. Come and learn about our sharp billed, feathered friends and how to attract them to your backyard. Make a woodpecker feeder and some home-made suet to take home and serve a healthy snack to those hungry headbangers. Kids can make a woodpecker hat to show their appreciation for our hard headed birds....details >>

    Bison Hike

    We will explore the prairie while learning about bison. Join us on our guided bison hike to see what the prairie has to offer this time of year. Don't forget your cameras! Be prepared for a two mile hike over uneven terrain. Bringing water, snacks, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. Binoculars will be useful in looking at bison as well as other wildlife that we may see. Dress for the weather....details >>

    The Murder of Emmett Till

    On August 25, 1955, Emmett Till whistled at a white woman outside a Mississippi grocery store. Three days later, the 14-year-old African-American boy from Chicago was kidnapped, tortured, murdered, and thrown into a river. For the next 50 years, there were no memorials to Till’s murder in the Mississippi Delta. Since 2005, many memorials have been created. Professor Dave Tell introduces various Till memorials to explore the competing narratives of exactly what happened that night....details >>

    Guest Speaker: A Wilderness Icon: Utah's Red Rock Canyonland

    Walk-in (all ages) Clayton Daughenbaugh, conservation organizer with Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, will discuss efforts to conserve southern Utah's canyon country and screen Wild Utah - a short film documenting citizen efforts to conserve public lands in the area.
