Eighty thousand Kansans served in World War I; 227,000 in World War II. We pay tribute to all Kansas soldiers by telling the story of Kansan James Clark Hughes. He served from 1917 to 1948 in the U.S. Army, and fought in both world wars. He left detailed records of his time in service; he photographed battlefields and towns in Europe; recorded his daily survival as a Japanese Prisoner of War; and saved many belongings from the wars later donated to this museum. Park Day 2017
Join us for Park Day 2017! On April 1, 2017 volunteers across the country will join together to preserve Civil War battlefields and historic sites. You can pitch in for preservation at the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site. Volunteers will meet at the visitor center at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Baseball : 1860s Style
We kick off our 2017 Living History season with a game of Baseball: 1860s style! The Mahaffie Stagecoach Drivers compete against the Westerns Base Ball Club of Topeka from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. After some formal innings, visitors may try their hand at being a 'hurler' (pitcher) or 'striker' (batter).
Activities may include:
Visiting the Mahaffie House
Cookstove and blacksmith demonstrations
Seasonal outdoor activities.
