    Captured: The Extraordinary Adventures of Colonel Hughes

    Eighty thousand Kansans served in World War I; 227,000 in World War II. We pay tribute to all Kansas soldiers by telling the story of Kansan James Clark Hughes. He served from 1917 to 1948 in the U.S. Army, and fought in both world wars. He left detailed records of his time in service; he photographed battlefields and towns in Europe; recorded his daily survival as a Japanese Prisoner of War; and saved many belongings from the wars later donated to this museum.     Kansas History Day State Contest

    History Day is a year long learning opportunity for grades six through twelve, that lets students explore history topics that interest them. They use primary and secondary research resources, and then analyze the information, in light of an over-arching historical theme or question.     Spring on the Farm

    It's spring on the Mahaffie Farm! Watch our farmers shear the sheep, help wash and skirt the wool. Help in the garden and see what is cooking on the cookstove. Other activities may include: Dyeing wool demonstrations Blacksmith demonstrations Stagecoach rides Visiting the Mahaffie House Visiting exhibits in the Heritage Center and Agricultural Heritage Livestock Barn All activities included with regular site admission: $7/adults, $5/children ages 5-11, children 4 & under are free....details >>

    Spring Scout Day on the Farm

    Boy and Girl Scouts of all levels can experience spring time on the Mahaffie farm. Scouts and their families are encouraged to visit each activity at their own pace. Each activity will have a person in 19th century clothing sharing their information. Two sessions are offered: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $7/scout (includes Mahaffie patch), one accompanying adult admitted free with one paid scout admission, siblings ages 5-11 are $5 and children ages 4 & under are free.
