    Susan B. Anthony Visits Olathe, Ks

    In 1867, Kansas voters were faced with the opportunity to give suffrage to white women or African-American men. Susan B Anthony, Clarina Nichols and other suffragettes along with proponents of rights for African-American people rushed to Kansas to participate in the debate. This theatrical presentation uses historical newspapers, letters and diary entries to tell the story of the 1867 referendum.     This reader’s theatre program will explore women’s suffrage and the rights of African Americans in 1867 Kansas. In 1867, Kansas Voters had the opportunity to grant suffrage to either black men or white women.The viewpoints in this program are representative of the time period and don’t reflect the City of Olathe’s or Freedom’s Frontier’s opinions on the 1867 vote.
