Author Lana Wirt Myers: The Diaries of Reuben Smith, Kansas Settler and Civil War Soldier

In 1854, after arriving from England, twenty-two-year-old Reuben Smith traveled west, to Kansas Territory. There he found the bloody prelude to the Civil War, as Free Staters and defenders of slavery battled to stake claims. For 50 years, Smith wrote fascinating narratives about his observations and experiences of territorial days, the border war, civil war, and early Kansas politics (he served three terms as state representative and 15 years as steward of the Kansas State Insane Asylum).
