“When Kings Reigned,” Film with commentary by Barbara Higgins-Dover. When Kings Reigned is a historical documentary about men who lived life on the Kansas River during a time of reconstruction. The story begins with two black men, one a runaway slave, living in Lawrence Kansas just a few short years after the end of the Civil War. William Quantrill and his guerrilla militia had burned the city down on August 21st 1863 and the Civil War wreaked havoc on Kansas as it fought to be a free state.
