Excelsior Springs, Missouri, is our only stop on this tour. We start out at The Elms Hotel and Spa, to learn about this historic place's connections to Harry Truman. Then, it's off to the Hall of Waters Visitor Center and Cultural Museum, and the Excelsior Springs Museum, where we learn about the famous waters and springs. (07/2016)
Some of our travels begin in places you might not normally think of as places to learn about history. We begin this tour of Johnson County, Kansas, at the Olathe Memorial Cemetery, where we learn about some of the people who played a role in the history of the city, and the state. From there, we visit the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm, and the Museum of Deaf History, Arts and Culture before heading to Overland Park. Our first stop in Overland Park is the Johnson County Central Resource Library. We get a sneak peak of the Johnson County Museum while it's under construction, and then visit the Santa Fe Trail interpretive panels in old town Overland Park, and wrap up our tour at the Overland Park Historical Society. This month featured some of the sites in Jackson County, Missouri (Kansas City). We visit the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, take a trip through Loose Park to see interpretive panels, enjoy the interactive exhibits at the National World War I Museum and Memorial, lunch at Union Station and use the app there to insert ourselves in the building's history, and then take our inner children to the Kansas City Toy and Miniature Museum. We visit a Frontier Military Historic Byway visitor center and rest stop, Trading Post Museum, Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site, the Mound City Historical Park, and the St. Philippine Duchesne Shrine and Memorial Park in Linn County, Kansas. (04/2016)
