Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area (FFNHA) is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2026 Freedom’s Frontier Mini Grants. Funding for the award supports projects that enhance visitor experiences, preserve regional heritage, and strengthen community engagement at FFNHA partner sites across eastern Kansas and western Missouri.

This year’s awardees represent a diverse range of initiatives, including America250 exhibits, wayfinding signage for FIFA World Cup visitors, and general facility repairs and improvements.

“Mini Grants are an important tool for supporting our partners’ day-to-day work,” said Lucinda Adams, Executive Director of Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area. “These projects may be smaller in scale, but they have a meaningful impact on how visitors experience and connect with our region’s stories.”

2026 Freedom’s Frontier Mini Grant recipients:

Cass County Historical Society (Harrisonville, Missouri)
Gordon Parks Museum (Fort Scott, Kansas)

Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area works in partnership with local communities to preserve and share stories of frontier settlement, the Missouri-Kansas Border War and Civil War, and enduring civil rights disputes. Through programs like Freedom’s Frontier Mini Grants, FFNHA continues to invest in projects that bring tourism and economic development to regional communities while bringing the area’s stories to life for residents and visitors alike.

Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area (FFNHA) builds awareness of struggles for freedom in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Established by Congress in 2006, FFNHA covers a unique physical and cultural landscape across 41 counties and 31,000 square miles. It promotes three diverse, interwoven, and nationally significant stories: frontier settlement, the Missouri-Kansas Border War and Civil War, and enduring civil rights disputes. FFNHA inspires respect for multiple perspectives and empowers area residents to preserve and share these stories, achieving its goals through interpretation, preservation, conservation, and education for all residents and visitors. It is one of 62 federally recognized national heritage areas across the United States.
